Ravi Salgia M.D., Ph.D., is the Arthur & Rosalie Kaplan Chair in Medical Oncology at City of Hope's comprehensive cancer center. There, he leads over 100 medical oncology faculty as professor and chair of the Department of Medical Oncology & Therapeutics Research.
Prior to joining City of Hope, Dr. Salgia served as a tenured professor of medicine, pathology, and dermatology, director of the Thoracic Oncology Program and the Aerodigestive Tract Program Translational Research Lab in the section of hematology/oncology, vice chair for translational research in the Department of Medicine and associate director for translational science at the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chicago. Prior to the University of Chicago, he was a faculty member at the Dana-Farber Institute and Harvard Medical School for a decade, initially as an instructor of medicine, then assistant professor of medicine.
Dr. Salgia earned his undergraduate summa cum laude in mathematics, biology and chemistry, and then his medical doctorate and Ph.D. from Loyola University in Chicago, where he also completed fellowships in neurochemistry and physiology. As an undergraduate and graduate student, he published several manuscripts in mathematics and basic sciences. He continued his postgraduate training with an internship and residency in internal medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, followed by a fellowship in medical oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, during which time he also served as a clinical fellow at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Board-certified in medical oncology, Dr. Salgia serves on various panels for the National Cancer Institute. He has consistently received research grants from the National Institutes of Health for his research work and has been awarded several invention discoveries and patents related to his work. He is the co-chief editor of the Journal of Carcinogenesis. Dr. Salgia also serves on the editorial advisory board of four additional journals. He has authored over 550 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and editorials, three books, and over 30 book chapters.
Dr. Salgia is frequently invited to present his work at national and international conferences and symposia, and is the recipient of several honors and awards, including πμε National Competition in Mathematics, Richard V. Andree Award for “Volume of an n-Dimensional Unit Sphere," 2016 Asclepius Award from the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, IACA Award for Outstanding Contributions to Oncology, Sun Pharma Award and served as a member of NIH/NCI’s Tumor Progression and Metastasis Study Section, and CONC Study Section. He is currently on the board of directors for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. He is part of the CI4CC "Directors Circle." He is on the local leadership board for American Lung Association. Also, he is recognized on “Best Doctors” and “Top Doctors” lists, and is listed in Wikipedia.
